Our Legacy

A trust born from one engineer's vision in 1975 — and the five-decade journey that built J S Hospital.

1975 – 1988

The Founding

In 1975, Shri Navnit Thakershy, a young civil engineer, envisioned a trust dedicated to helping the poor and needy of Ahmedabad access quality healthcare. That vision became Thakershy Charitable Trust, registered under the Charitable Trust Act in 1978. On 15 May 1983, the trust's hospital opened its doors — starting simply, with OPD and Pathology services following in 1988.

Growth & Community

Through the 1990s and 2000s, the hospital grew from an outpatient clinic into a full-service institution — adding indoor beds, an operation theatre, a Pediatrics department inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, and a Dialysis unit. When the 2001 Gujarat earthquake struck, Thakershy Charitable Trust carried out relief work in Ahmedabad and Bhuj. That same year, the hospital was renamed in honour of Shri Harishbhai Surti's generous donation — Sushri Jashumatiben Shantilal Surti Charitable General Hospital.

In 2005, the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Narendrabhai Modi, graced a Trust fundraising programme — a mark of the growing recognition of Thakershy Charitable Trust's work.

The Reconstruction

The proceeds from the 'Mokshalay' auction set in motion the Trust's most ambitious chapter yet: a purpose-built, multi-specialty hospital. Reconstruction began on 1 May 2020 — the hospital having already stepped up as a COVID care centre that year, treating over 400 patients through the pandemic. The newly constructed J S (Jasumatiben Shantilal Surti) Hospital launched on 15 May 2023, with OPD, Pathology and Radiology services flagged off within days. IPD services followed on 12 April 2024, and on 30 April 2025 the Cath Lab and Cardiology department opened — completing the hospital you see today.
